One more on Conservation Easements-Got a Letter from Our Land Our Lives

What's interesting is that Sid Miller apparently is AGAINST Conservation Easements... when it comes to supporting this group. But FOR them when it comes to Chalk Mountain. Dare I say that he says what is politically expedient?

In response to your email sent to our website, conservation easements have been on the forefront in Coryell County for the past 3 years due to Fort Hood proposing that instrument to obtain a buffer around the military installation.  We, Our Land Our Lives, do not believe conservation easements would get a buffer for Fort Hood because not enough people would sign up for it and we do believe conservation easements would be very bad for our county, our communities, and the landowners.    The Coryell County Commissioners did ask for Fort Hood and Congressman Carter to have someone at the Oct. 14th meeting to report on the status of the buffer program; however, General Lynch, the new commanding general at Fort Hood, requested that Fort Hood not attend because he had put a 1 year moratorium on the buffer program.   He has stated he wants time to evaluate the situation and hear from all sides before going forward with a program.

It is the goal of Our Land Our Lives to have no program at all or to have one that will benefit both Fort Hood and the landowner.  Our Land Our Lives has presented a lease-type program to Fort Hood that we feel will accomplish that goal but to date it has not been accepted by them.   You can read about that program on our web site as well as many other articles and newsletters explaining why we feel conservation easements will not work and the reasons why.   If you will look at the Open Letter on 11-20-07, you will see Representative Sid Miller’s name listed as one of our supporters.  He also wrote a letter to General Simmons in January 2008 in support of Our Land Our Lives.   It appears that he and Ernie Casbeer are in agreement that conservation easements are a bad idea.

I wrote her back with the link to the video where Miller said they're a good idea and recommended CE for Chalk Mountain. Ernie Casbeer is against them and said so the other day.
