DETROIT (AP) - The U.S. automotive sales slump worked its way to two Midwestern automaking towns Monday when General Motors Corp. announced it would close a Michigan metal stamping plant and stop making sport utility vehicles in Wisconsin by the end of the year.

Workers at the Grand Rapids Metal Center in suburban Wyoming were told Monday that it will close by the end of 2009. The plant employs about 1,340 hourly and 180 salaried workers, GM spokesman Tony Sapienza said.

In Janesville, Wis., workers got the news Monday that SUV production at the plant, with 1,200 employees represented by the United Auto Workers, will end Dec. 23. The closure is earlier than GM had expected, but was necessary because of declining sales, GM spokesman Chris Lee said.

So let me get this straight...
Weak sales of one particular vehicle means you close a manufacturing facility? How about you convert it into an electric vehicle plant? Oh yeah that's right you don't want to actually SELL these cars, you just want people to think you will eventually build them. This is further proof that GM deserve no bailout from the taxpayers because they want to close a plant instead of making it build something people actually will buy, you know that electric car you keep saying is coming...the one you can't build yet because you don't have a factory to do it with, well here is one...USE IT GM and keep those manufacturing jobs here in the USA!
