The Paluxy Pedal bicycle ride is going to be held here on October 11th. I'm not riding in it, but I was curious, after reading some of the comments of previous riders about their experiences, what the *Wall* was. It's a really nice day today, sunny and a little cool, so I looked at the ride maps and then headed off with my camera to look at the road. These are some pics coming from the other direction than the bicyclists, that is Off Hwy 67 down 2013 (the road that goes down to Rough Creek Lodge) then left on 2011, then on to 2012. Wow. We know around here that Somervell County is hilly and absolutely gorgeous. In fact, it's always seemed a little like the start of Hill Country, although there's more faux cedar aka juniper trees than mesquite. The following pics do not do justice to the steepness of this particular hill, but o the view!
Update: Here's a video I did in 2010 that more accurately shows the steepness of the one *Wall*
Coming from the OTHER direction- the road looks fairly flat.
Here' the first clue that this isn't an ordinary hill-heh.
This is actually BEFORE the road got too steep
Here we go. Now, bear in mind that the cyclists are going to be coming BACK this way. The road that you see curving off to the left ia long steep climb. I didn't take a pic on that because I didn't want to stop in case someone came from behind and hit my car!
One more on that glorious view before we all head DOWN (or head up, as the cyclist will be doing.
Well, I DID get one from around the corner atter turning to the right/
Almost to the bottom.
A litlte more, not so steep here.
But it ain/'t like this is flat going up to that kiiller hill either.-again, remember you are looking at this from the OPPOSITE direction the cyclists will be going. They will be coming UP the hill.
And finally, here was a cool looking sign at the corner of 2012 and 203. This is the road that, coming the other way, cyclists will be turning LeFT so that they can go up this steep hill.
