Memorial has the implication and significance of the word, "memory" as in, remember our soldiers and Veterans who have lived and died for the U.S.
Veterans from all times and wars share in the belief and patriotism of our nation.
However, we do NOT treat our returning Veterans very well. They are lacking significant medical and social services that are urgently needed. If we continue to send our children off to various wars, we need to treat them better upon their return.
Currently the returning Veteran population has the largest numbers of suicidal occurrences. There's a good reason for that.
They fight in unprecedented urgencies and in foreign lands that may feel like a hell on earth. When our Veterans return, something in their minds may have "snapped" but they aren't provided any real counseling on how to live again within our society and become successful citizens.
This Memorial Day let's remember those who died for our many freedoms, those who have earned our respect as Veterans and those who need our help in order to reenter and live again.
