A former nuclear plant worker in Ohio received three years' probation and was fined $7,500 for concealing the worst corrosion ever found at a U.S. reactor. Prosecutors say the former engineering design manager at the Davis-Besse plant misled regulators seven years ago into believing the plant along Lake Erie was safe.

But inspectors found an acid leak that nearly ate through the reactor's protective steel cap. It's not clear how close the plant was to an accident. The damage forced the plant to be shut down for about two years. David Geisen was one of three plant workers charged with lying to regulators. A jury found him guilty last October. He faced up to five years in prison when he was sentenced Thursday by Judge David Katz.

The plant's operator, Akron-based First Energy Corp., paid a record $28 million in fines a year ago while avoiding federal charges.
