“Race always creates furor when the hearts of people suffer from the plague of sin,” said the Rev. Nika Davis, pastor of Waco’s predominantly black Second Missionary Baptist Church.
Churchgoers from other backgrounds and other races aren’t likely to readily understand such furor.
“The only way to clearly understand that style of preaching is for our fellow white believers to regularly attend our churches,” Davis said. “Whites will never understand the different styles unless they become members of black churches.”..
The Rev. Davis, of Waco’s Second Missionary Baptist Church, said Obama was correct Tuesday to denounce the most incendiary remarks of his former pastor’s sermons, even while declining to condemn the man himself.
“It is time to deal with the stimulus of Wright’s remarks rather than using them to politically smear Senator Obama,” Davis said. “If people are so concerned about the remarks, then let us work to eliminate the environment of hatred across all racial lines.”
Davis also wonders aloud about the pastors of past presidents, including those from another era.
“I wonder who were the spiritual leaders of those presidents that condoned slavery and segregation in America for so many years,” he said. “For whomever they were, we need to run some clips of their sermons!”
