I've scanned some more of the transcript. It's over 600 pages so I am only putting in parts that interest me, as I'm not a Copy Nun. Included in this PDF file are expanded bits about who attended the campouts, what about the coded notes, or the *I never* game, the car lights on the Buick Lasabre, etc. (As usual, best to right click the link and download to your computer for performance. )
Here's what I don't get. I understand how the random reader/viewer can watch less than 2 hours of a sensationalized television show and have varying opinions and be drastically uninformed about the facts of a case. I think it's the same syndrome as passing on those uniformed emails that tell you to send something to every person you know in the world, without verifying whether it is actually 1 or not; in the case of the show, one couldn't know FROM the show only whether Ogletree was guilty or innocent or whether Matt and Chayce were lying, but there's an online document that shows what the ALJ said about the boys (now men.) Even I wasn't propelled to investigate this at all until I read that extremely offensive comment from lshef that actually drew my attention to Ogletree's appearance on Dr Phil. I was a criminal justice major in college, and I also have had, at times, a bent to read mystery and *1 crime* detective books, so, after I found the actual 80 page summary of the ALJ/TEA hearing online, I was hooked. But that's me. And I've found it more than interesting to post parts of the criminal trial and ALJ hearing itself, as I realize a lot of people would never see these details otherwise.
Wayne Rotan was quoted in the A-AS as saying, in a school board meeting, that he believes Ogletree is guilty. Now, he wasn't the superintendent at the time, but he was passing judgment on Ogletree's innocence. Now, he must have read the ALJ/TEA document, right? Surely he wouldn't only prevent Ogletree from volunteering at the school without doing so. And it's clear to me from reading the ALJ/TEA transcript that the attorney for GRISD, Tom Myers, was present at the hearing; although he was supposed to be there as an observer, as anyone else would be, at one point the TEA attorneys tried to call for a break so that they could consult with him. So one has to suppose that Rotan would have contacted the attorney and found out that 1. Charges were dropped against Ogletree and 2. the ALJ found that all the statements of Matt B and Chayce W were 0 AND that the TEA Board voted to reinstate her license. Knowing all of that, even if he only read the ALJ/TEA summary, and not any transcripts, why would he take the actions and say what he did? It's just puzzling to me, because one expects that anyone acting as superintendent in charge of several schools has himself studied the facts carefully. That applies as well to the school board who voted on this.
Back to the transcript. A few parts I am NOT going to scan, but are there. One is the description of what Chayce says he did to have sex with Ogletree-if you really want to hear this, go listen to the Dr Phil show, where he had no shame but to tell this story to the world. It's not only that if you were to read the transcript that you would see it's physically impossible for him to do what he said, and it's also not plausible, but remember that the ALJ judge, who DID see andhear all the evidence said it wasn't 1.
I'm also not going to scan all the parts about the Ogletree marriage. I think it was sleazy for the TEA attorney, Chris Jones to bring that up as if there was something immoral about it. In the transcript, which goes into much more detail, obviously, than the 80 page summary, the timelines for dating and marriage are established. Ogletree was dating the son of one of the coaches until at least mid-summer; the coach said the reason he thought they broke up was that his son was going off to college to become an Episcopalian priest and Ogletree is a Roman Catholic-that was his conjectture anyway, it's not as if he knew for sure. However, a lot of kids that date in high school break up over the summer before college. Ogletree didn't start dating Mr. Ogletree until the end of the summer, and Mr. not only went to the school authorities about it, and also talked to her parents about dating her (how courtly and old fashioned!) but the school personnel enthusiastically later helped celebrate their marriage. For this attorney to try to bring this up as a smear which was not even on point truly *was* sleazy. And Ogletree's attorney said so. I also couldn't bring myself to post the smut that Matt B talked about, but it's there in detail in the transcript. You want soft porn, you'll have to read it somewhere else.
Now on to the transcript-I think I'll have to chunk this into two posts, there's so much.
Why did the boys sit in the front of the class?
p 27 (p 1 of the PDF).
A. At the beginning of the year, they could sit wherever they chose to. I don't know exactly where in the back of the room, but a bunch of boys were in the back of the room. And I then created a seating chart in which I moved the boys towards the front so I could keep them in line better.
Note that several of the student witnesses talk about how disrespectful the boys were. I remember my years in school and the ones that sat in the back were the ones that were the cutups.
p 37, 38 (p 2 of the PDF)
Q. Did you and Mr. Ogletree invite students to socialize with you in your home?
A. Yes.
Q. How often did you invite students over?
A. Oh, goodness. Honestly, I couldn't tell you how many times. Several- on several occasions. I could take a guess.
Q. That's okay. I don't want you to do that. Several occasions is fine.
A. We had a lof ot different groups come out for cooking and different things.
Q. Were there usually males and females in the group?
A. When they did not stay the night at the house, yes,. Well, actually there could have been. I think usually they came out with groups of their friends, yes. But I can't think of anything specifically. I wouldn't have had anything against that.
Q. But when they were male and female, they were not overnight?
A. Correct.
Q. What was the purpose of these student/teacher gatherings?
A. Well, depending on which gathering, just a time to get together outside of the classroom. The kids really enjoyed it. We're in a small town, small community. Everyone knows each other. A large number of these students had both me and my husband. They got to spend time with their teachers outside of class, see us in a different setting, be around our daughter, just to give them an opportunity to do that and just because they wanted to.
Q. So you said depending upon which social gathering it was?
A. Well, some of them we cooked French food. So I mean, all of the other reasons were there as well, to be around us, and it was fun and it was enjoyable and they would play with my daughter.
I've said before the whole county is only about 7000 people, this is the second smallest county in Texas and in the city itself there are only about 2000.
From Mr. Ogletree's testimony (p 344, p 16 of the PDF)
Q. Let's talk about the fall 2002 camp out. Matt alleges that he engaged in sexual acts with your wife while he had gone over to his house to pick up migraine medicine. Matt alleges that he went to your house in the fall of 2002 for a camp out. And after developing a migraine, your wife took him to his house to get medication. And he claims that on the way back that's when the sexual acts occurred. Do you recall having a camp out in the fall of 2002?
A. Yes, sir.
Q. Could you tell us about how that came about?
A. The camp out was on September 20th, 2002. And it was an off weekend for a football game. ... The boys weren't playing a football game. So that opened the door for the kids to be able to come out to our house and have a camp out.
Q. Had you had events at your house before?
A. Yes, sir.
Q. And was the... was the school administration aware of it?
A. As far as dialoguing directly, I had mentioned about the kids coming out one time to have a French meal with us to my building principal at that time. And there was no comment. We had... Let's see.. the vice principal's niece was present at one of the times that the kids came over, several teacher's kids. And then, of course, we had a school board member's daughter who came out. So the administration was aware.
Q. Did anyone ever lodge any complaints or concerns about having these events at your house?
A. Never.
Q. Now, were there boys and girls at this camp out in 2002?
A. No. Joelle and I talked about that. And we thought it was in the best interest not to have the boys and girls together. Just, you know, it could possibly cause problems. And so when we set it up, we originally set it up to have the boys camp out. .. And we were going to have a separate one later for the girls.
Q. Did you ever have a separate one for the girls?
A. No, that didn't happen.
......
(p 20 PDF) Joelle Ogletree talking about the camp out.
Q. Was there a camp out at your house in the fall of 2002?
A. Yes.
Q. Could you tell us about it?
A. The kids.. a group of the kids wanted to come out to our house. They had both Doug and I in class. It's a small town, a small community. You know basically all of the teachers and the teachers know all of the kids and their families. They wanted to come out to our house. They wanted to have a camp out. We told them that they could. It was sort of a group. There was... Matt was.. Matt didn't have my husband. He was just my student. And the rest were my French students except for Reed, and Reed was not my student. He was just my husband's student.
Q. So your husband was there?
A. Yes.....
Q. Is there any reason why it was just boys?
A. Absolutely. I was not.. The girls wanted to come over, too. I said, no, we're not going to do that. First of all, I didn't want that many people at my house. And I'm not going to have boys and girls at the same time. And they said, well, we can just come over, you know, for part of it, and then leave. And I said, no, I don't want to do that. We''ll have a whole separate event for the girls. And like I said, I was terminated before that happened.
She continues on page 22 and 23 with WHY it was boys (because the girls had student council that night but it was a bye week in football. And also who knew about these activities.
WHY did SHE drive him? p 23.
My husband and I talked about it. WE didn't want one of his friends aking him because then we've got two kids that are supposed to be under our care out running around town. Anyway, I went ahead and took Matt and Doug stayed with the guys.
She also took her daughter.
