from the Dallas Morning News. And while this is the first year lawmakers have been required to list in the federal budget the projects for which they secured funding, Congress hardly curtailed its spending. Foes of earmarking hoped the requirement to own up to congressional pet projects would lead to fewer lawmakers steering dollars to their districts – but that was hardly the case, as lawmakers stuffed thousands into this year's budget. For instance, Rep. Pete Sessions, R-Dallas, singled out $195,000 for an obesity study. Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, found $167,000 for Children's Medical Center Dallas. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, R-Texas, secured $195,000 for the Women's Museum in Dallas. Rep. Ralph Hall, R-Rockwall, obtained $100,000 for a war memorial honoring World War II hero Audie Murphy.
I also got a laugh out of this blurb from KBH because Ms Suckup actually has a different view than Bush. Senator Hutchison takes her responsibility as a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee seriously, and through her seniority she advocates strongly for critical projects in Texas," Mr. Mackowiak said. "Earmarks do not increase federal spending. They direct federal spending to specific projects. Senator Hutchison believes it is better that elected representatives, who can be held accountable by voters, allocate federal funds, rather than unaccountable bureaucrats in Washington, D.C."
Then let's just boot YOUR butt out, shall we?
