Wah! Bush's *Legacy* Sack Is Empty and No Political Capital To Buy More- The Immigration Butt-Kickin'

Every once in a while I start to find myself pitying George Bush... and then I remember what an arrogant, unschooled, lazy so and so he is and I smack myself back to reality. Bush is in the lame-duck part of his presidency and truth to tell, there's not much he's been able to accomplish, PLUS he's now known as a war criminal, a puppet to his vice president, a man who's desperately trying to hide his involvement in torture, spying on Americans, and politicizing the Justice Department. But the coup de gras is that he wanted at least ONE thing to pass that he could trumpet at his library where he hopes to fool people into thinking he was a great man... immigration. And he couldn't get his own party to back him on it. PFFFFTTT! You lose, Bush!

Yeah -- all that stuff from Tony Snow about how Bush had 60 votes in the Senate and a majority of members supported many of the provisions in the immigration bill? Well, apparently not. Even as late as this morning they were saying it was too close to call. Really?

WASHINGTON -- In a stunning setback for President Bush and other advocates of a proposed immigration law overhaul, the Senate voted today to block a final vote on the legislation, almost certainly dooming any further effort at reform in Congress this year.

On a vote of 46-53, the Senate fell 14 votes shy of the 60 needed to cut off an inevitable filibuster and move to a final vote on the bill, which had been cobbled together in recent months by a bipartisan alliance of about a dozen senators working in concert with the Bush administration.

Talk about tostado. You know, spending as much time with Bush as we do, a certain myopia can creep in. Sometimes it seems like he's not totally irrelevant and that he does have some power, somewhere. They liked him in Kansas recently.

But we digress. What a butt-kickin'!
