It's been a pretty sorry pledge all along, and to be honest, adding God doesn't help.
But that wasn't enough for the zealots in Austin who, like the Pharisees of the New Testament, feel they need to parade their religion before us. Legislators also decided to have the words "In God We Trust" permanently displayed in the chambers of the state Senate and House.
To be honest, I'm embarrassed for God that so many people think it is necessary that we be compelled to pay homage to him.
Is that any different from the evil kings of old who tried to force Jews to worship idols? Or from the communist regimes that tried to erase God from their societies?...
Seriously, I do not need anyone to tell me or my child when to say God's name, nor do I need any prescribed homily to declare my allegiance to him along with my pledge to a state or government or a symbol with stars and stripes.
And I most certainly don't need instruction in religion from any politician, no matter how powerful, whether in the statehouse, the White House or the halls of Congress.
