What's Alberto Gonzalez Hiding? His Own Involvement in Corruption Part 1

I saw a cryptic note on TalkingPointsMemo a bit ago that teased the question about a US Attorney, Bradley J. Schlozman. When I started using "The Google", it was like wandering into a smarmy mess of corporate crime. When I watched AG the other day, I was not only unimpressed with his *answers* but wondered, like Feinstein, just WHO actually put those names on the list ... and WHY... that information, despite all the best efforts of both Democrats AND Republicans, was not forthcoming. (And why it involved, not 8, but 10 US Attorneys!) But here's a clue-whoever did it definitely did it in at least 2 instances to get corruption cases that involved corporations and Republicans... dropped. We already know about Carol Lam, who was about to issue a subpoena for House Rep Jerry Lewis. But there's also a Missouri AND TEXAS angle that involves AG as well.

First up, here's what happened in Missouri. Roy Blunt and Matt Blunt are brothers. Gov Roy Blunt had been accused, according to the LA Times, of rewarding...

GOP supporters with lucrative contracts to run the state's driver's license offices. Cummins handled the case because U.S. attorneys in Missouri had recused themselves over potential conflicts of interest.

US Attorneys in Missouri? Which US Attorneys? Well, at least ONE was Todd Graves. And Todd Graves wife.

The Missouri corruption allegations centered on a change in the law that allowed for privatization of the state's license fee agencies. In 2005, Missouri newspapers began reporting that some of the contracts went to Blunt's supporters, including the wife of the U.S. attorney in Kansas City, Todd Graves.

So, Todd Graves, in March, 2006, stepped down from being a US Attorney and went into private practice. Someone had to work the case, right? Guess who that someone was. Bud Cummins of Arkansas! Why him?

Bud Cummins, the U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Arkansas, would probably decide if charges should be filed, pending the investigation. Cummins, and not one of the two U.S. attorneys from Missouri, would likely handle the case in order to avoid conflicts of interest.

Catherine Hanaway, the U.S. attorney in St. Louis, is also a Republican and is a former speaker of the Missouri House.

Bradley Schlozman is the U.S. attorney for the state
