Boy. What does that say about a president when the place that is going to have his library has to run out and allay concerns that SMU Might Actually Have a Connection With the Library and imply that Bush's tainted politics will not spread through the campus. Quick! Alert the CDC and immunize the students against Pro-Bushisms!
Mindful of reports that President Bush wants a conservative think tank with his presidential library, Southern Methodist University's top official is trying to allay concerns that pro-Bush politics might spread through campus....
In an e-mail sent to faculty, staff and students Friday, SMU president Gerald Turner wrote that the library's public policy institute would report to a separate foundation and not the university.
William McElvaney, an SMU professor who wrote an opinion column in the campus paper that was skeptical of the library, said he still had questions after reading Turner's letter.
"I'd like to hear more about how the Bush institute that would report to the Bush foundation," McElvaney said. "What might that be about, and will that be beyond SMU's control?"
Yes. How is it that SMU has been pushing so hard to get the library, including using eminent domain to throw people out of their homes to get the land, but (wink-wink) they really WON'T have anything to do with this library? Then, why the heck is it there, especially when Bush's beliefs and policies are in such contrast to SMU's United Methodist principles?
McElvaney also wondered whether the library would respect United Methodist social principles, which he said are contrary to the Iraq war and what he called the Bush administration's authorization of torture.
Nope. Bush is all for torture. That's already established, so the library undoubtedly will be justifying more of the same.
