The reason the State of Texas did this is because they said they had an automated system to process claims... the problem is that the automated system isn't functional yet and there's no timetable for it to be. Meanwhile, there aren't enough workers to process claims. Seems to me that before they cut those jobs, they ought to have had the system in place already and WORKING. A group of Waco women who process the claims got fed up and marched out on La Salle avenue with signs chanting "More Staff". Two years ago, the area had 40 tenured eligibility workers, she said. Such employees have been trained on how to process claims for all three programs. Now Waco has only six tenured workers and is understaffed overall, Cooper said.
