Kip Averitt (Texas SD22) Spoke at UTA about Politics- *They'll Let Anybody Do it*

Interesting article.

Using the people in the room as a sample of the Texas population, Averitt asked the audience to stand and then eliminated those who he believed would not be likely to influence the election process. Of the 70 percent of eligible voters registered, about half of them actually cast a ballot and two-thirds of that amount vote straight ticket every time, he said. By the end of the demonstration, only two people were left standing.

Averitt also encouraged audience members to participate in primary elections. With extremely low voter turnout, primary elections are usually determined by those on the far end of the political spectrum, Averitt said.

I'm not sure if I agree with that. Seems to me that the people who vote in a primary may not be on far ends of the spectrum, but be more engaged in the process.

"The primary process is where the talent for our government gets picked, and a very tiny percentage of people actually participate in that process. It's a powerful place for y'all to be," he said

He also talked about lobbyists.

Despite a generally negative public perception, lobbyists can be good or bad, and legislators must rely on them to provide information on hundreds of issues, he said.

"Some [lobbyists] are very intelligent, articulate, respected and they come into your office, and you trust them. Trust is the main thing they have to sell," Averitt said. "Then there are others that are not quite as trustworthy, and you may take what they say with a grain of salt, but that's the process. That's why you got elected."

No. You got elected to listen to the voice of your CONSTITUENTS, not the lobbyists. Where in that sentence are the people in your district mentioned????
