Have written about the SBC before, in particular about separation of church and state. In the 1980's Paige Patterson was one who actively worked to gut that basic premise of Baptists.
Apparently Patterson tried to break down a student who had reported she was raped at the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. The board of trustees removed him as the president on May 23, but still gave him goodies, such as continuing to be president emeritus and other benefits. As you might imagine, this didn't sit too well with some Baptists, particularly women.
In sermons he gave between 2000 and 2014 that have been made public, Paige Patterson, seminary president and former denominational president, has encouraged women who are abused by their husbands not to divorce but to pray instead. He also commented in the sermons on female bodies, including that of a teenage girl, and women’s appearances. Now, thousands of people are calling for his removal just weeks before he is scheduled to deliver a key sermon at the huge denomination’s annual convention.
and then this came out.
Paige Patterson, who was terminated from his top post at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, told the head of campus security that he wanted to meet alone with a student who told him she was raped in order to "break her down," said Kevin Ueckert, the chairman of the seminary's board of trustees, in a statement.
Patterson made that request in the 2015 case via email and its contents were shared with the board on May 22, said Ueckert, in the statement released Friday. The new details about what led to the ousting of the storied leader in the evangelical denomination come two days after the seminary fired him.
Incidentally, one of the other *leaders* of the *conservative* hard turn to the right also left recently, Frank Page. He said he was leaving over "morally inappropriate relationship". I'm guessing he committed adultery.
