Text of invocation given during the ceremonial part of the meeting

Thank you for this opportunity to provide an inspirational  secular start to the meeting. Rather than bow your heads during this invocation, today I’m asking that you raise your eyes, look at the community assembled here and consider that we arrive here with a common purpose. When the City of Glen Rose Town Council comes together, they do so by consent of the citizens of Glen Rose, who are a diverse population. We represent many different faiths and philosophies as well as nonbelief.

Our community is made stronger by the presence of different cultures, traditions and viewpoints. Our shared constitution, with freedom of speech, assembly and religion,  is a shining example of what makes us, together, Americans.

All of us want to make Glen Rose the very best place it can be, even if we have different opinions on how to achieve that goal. Respecting each other’s right to hold views different than our own is critical, including minority viewpoints, as long as it those views don’t infringe upon the rights of others. Allow your deliberations, open in the light of sunshine,  to include informed reason, evidence and argument, as we all should,  not merely at city council meetings,  but in all areas of our lives
