Update 12/19/2014-Nope, not so much.

In a speech that Perry delivered at the A&M convocation Thursday night, he said that “upon deep reflection” he had decided to “politely decline this great honor.”

“I do so because certain places on this campus, like our most sacred traditions, transcend any one individual,” Perry said.

The renaming proposal came to light Tuesday when a single agenda item was posted for the special meeting of the regents — all appointed by Perry.

The student Senate hastily launched a petition asking that the name change not occur, and it attracted more than 7,000 signatures in two days.

In addition, student newspaper The Battalion panned the move in an editorial, saying students and alumni should have been given the opportunity to weigh in.

The editorial agreed that Perry — the most famous Aggie “not named Johnny Manziel” — should be recognized. But with any other building, the student journalists argued.

“The regents shouldn’t name the Academic Building after the governor. Not because he’s not qualified, but because no one is,” they wrote.

Perry attended the school from 1968 until 1972, making exactly two A's against nine D's and one F during his four-year tenure. He was more successful outside of the classroom, where he was a member of A&M's corps and a yell leader.

When Perry's transcripts were first made public in 2011, a college classmate told the Huffington Post that Perry wasn't the most studious guy on campus.

"A&M wasn't exactly Harvard on the Brazos River," the classmate said. "This was not the brightest guy around. We always kind of laughed. He was always kind of a joke."

It is fitting that the first night of Chanukah falls this year on the anniversary of the Boston Tea Party. The same spirit of freedom that inspired the Maccabees to rise up against a foreign empire motivated our Founding Fathers to rebel against the Crown on that fateful night.

“They knew, as the Jewish people know, that the few can overcome the many, that right can defeat might, that faith can transcend persecution. No matter how vast the darkness, all it takes is one candle to spread the light.

Yeah, the Boston Tea party was all about preserving a theocratic rule and protecting it from the imposition of Greek religious practices. Or maybe it’s that the Maccabees were just sick and tired of the East India Company’s monopoly on the tea trade. Might have been both! We’re pretty sure we read that somewhere, maybe in a Rush Limbaugh history book.
