Haven't written about my donkeys in about a year. I have two wonderful male donkeys, one which is a male of indeterminate age, probably at least 8-10 years, (has had 2 separate owners before me) and the other a young donkey less than 3 years of age. Both are jacks, ungelded. The younger one, the spotted one, has been, ever since we got it, jousting with the older one for dominance. The older one, brown, doesn't much care and is an extremely gentle guy but does kick up or show his teeth at the younger one when he's bothered. Younger, especially at feeding time, gets up on Older's back and tries to bite him. It has always appeared to be more annoying than dangerous to me, but I think I'm ready to make a change. I don't think I need to geld the older one, but am going to see about gelding the younger. In reading about the procedure, it looks like it can take around 30 days for the hormones to leave their system. Hoping that doing this will cause the younger to tone it down on his dominance attempts. I welcome comments about your experiences with 2 male donkeys. LIke I said, I don't think the older one, not gelded, will suddenly turn on the newly gelded one, but I hope this will make them live more harmoniously with each other.
