We watched a television documentary on MTBE a few years back, where a town's entire water supply was befouled, and not cleaned up. MTBE, or methyl tertiary-butyl ether, is an oxygenate widely used in gasoline to reduce air pollution. But it also has been found to contaminate drinking water supplies, sometimes leaving communities with expensive cleanup bills. Traces of MTBE have been found in water in almost every state, with levels high enough for potential cleanup problems in about half the states.
DeLay has changed priorities from being an out of control wild-eyed meddler in the judiciary to trying to prevent manufacturers of MTBE, who know that it contaminates drinking water but make it anyway, from being able to be sued.
