Britain storms an Iraqi police jail to rescue two British soldiers who had apparently been working undercover.



British authorities said Tuesday their troops stormed an Iraqi police jail in Basra the day before in a bid to rescue the pair, but only after talks for the men's release failed....

Iraqi officials said the two soldiers, who appeared to be working undercover, were dressed in Arab clothes and driving a civilian car. They were detained after firing at a police patrol, Iraqi police said.


Reporter for the NY Times slain by masked men claiming to be police officers

An Iraqi journalist and photographer working for The New York Times in Basra was found dead early Monday after being abducted from his home by a group of armed men wearing masks and claiming to be police officers, relatives and witnesses said.
