Conversations with History: Elizabeth Warren

Quoting Elizabeth Warren:

"We reached a point a few years ago where more people when through bankruptcy than graduated from college.... More children lived in homes that were filing for bankruptcy than filing for divorce.... One in seven Americans, right now, are dealing with a debt collector...

You can hear from Washington that this is all about personal responsibility, but at a certain point people start shaking their heads and saying "uh uh, this answer doesn't work.."

My question: Is the rising number of personal bankruptcies a populist issue?

Excellent discussion, OldBridge. Thank you. The reality of what has been happening to the middle class these last 30+ years certainly should be a populist issue. However, I really think the middle class in this country has not been paying attention to the political and corporate dynamic that has been methodically destroying the American Dream in our country and is just now realizing that something's wrong.

I remember when the banktruptcy bill also known as a giant kiss to the credit care industry passed. Chet Edwards voted with the Republicans for it, the Democrats voted against.

The *personal responsibility* also fell with the lawmakers who didn't set restrictions for the credit card industry (and banking industry) to prevent them from being able to both issue credit and gouge consumers.

And let's not forget that many people file for bankruptcy because of not being able to pay medical bills.
