This video is edited a little bit for Youtube, but you can hear the entire session here. What I was interested in hearing was several things Judge Maynard discussed. One was that Somervell County doesn't have a contingency fund but needs to set aside money IN CASE Somervell County takes over operations of GRMC *IF* GRMC defaults because they're not financially in good enough shape to keep running it themselves (and may I say right here that if they can't do it, then a hospital board ought to find someone or some entity other than Gary Marks to run it, eh?) . A second was a discussion of whether it would have been better to have the hospital district passed with THAT increase in taxes or the tax increases now that Somervell County proposes to make. A third item was abuot whether trimming the budget would have been better or whether basic services are being covered, and how projections were that we would be paying even MORE taxes than what we do at this point.
Anyway, I think you will find it interesting to watch. There are two hearings set for the public to come to to tell what they think. One is on September 14 at 9:30 am and the second is at September 21 at 9:30 am.
Most hospitals are in serious straits due to uninsured patients who can't pay their bills (does the Health Insurance Debate ring any bells??), and this one is no different. There might be some other entity out there chomping at the bit to come into Glen Rose, but I don't think so, not in this climate. I support Gary Marks and I supported the vote for the Hospital District. I do agree that the main reason it failed was because citizens had too many unanswered questions. I wish it had been presented more thoroughly. I also believe the devastating economic realities that surfaced everywhere this past year helped defeat the district. If I heard correctly, Judge Maynard is saying that the county may have to raise taxes even more than if the district had passed. I wonder how many citizens really appreciate this facility and how far it has come over the years.
