Yesterday hub and I were coming back from town and we saw an owl in the middle of the road near Fossil Rim. We went back to record him (or her) and moved it back off the road. It didn't seem particularly frightened-do people have owls as pets? I kind of thought it might bite hub.
P.S. I wish now we had gathered it up into our coat and taken it home because when I went by yesterday I saw that it was road kill. I googled a bit and saw that it's not unusual to find dead owls killed in or by roadways. I have never seen one before, I guess I thought they were smarter than that. This one didn't have a fear of us at all, nor did it try to attack us, just seemed more interested in what we were doing. I actually wondered if it might have been someone's pet. I do feel conflicted-I would have liked it not to die, but I have chicks and birds that are sitting on eggs and it wouldn't do to encourage an owl to live here with all the other feasting it might do.
