I am totally against moving the power to choose textbooks and curriculum to the commissioner of education.
I was in Austin Mar. 27 and heard the SBOE at work as they listened to testimony, made comments, asked questions, etc. They were ensuring that they heard all sides of the matter. Why would I want someone who doesn't even represent me have all the decision making power? Sen. Averitt, you are definitely going down the wrong track on this one.

I wasn't in Austin but listened via the audio feed to the SBOE hearings. Seems to me that they generally ignored the findings of the committee they asked to make recommendations, generally asked questions of those that agreed with their creationist beliefs and ignored the others, and then made an end run at the last minute to try to sneak in creationism into science. Perhaps it is only a matter of getting rid of these people who are elected and putting in people who don't have contempt for both science and separation of church and state. Nonetheless, I applaud Kip Averitt for viewing this matter seriously and considering how these actions can further erode Texas poor science reputation.
