Texas State Senator Kip Averitt (SD22) Wants to STOP the SBOE Shenanigans

He would strip the board from decisions over curriculum and textbooks! Yes!

Seliger said the "political nature" of the elected board often "results in infighting and partisan beliefs becoming part of the public school curriculum" – as exemplified in the battle over science standards.

"The debate went on with almost no discussion of children," he said. "The fact is there is nothing that makes the board particularly qualified to choose curriculum materials and textbooks."

Averitt was more blunt, saying the board "has been nothing but the worst example of partisan bickering and fighting, Republicans and Democrats alike." There are 10 Republicans and five Democrats on the education board.

All because of the ridic games the Creationist SBOE members are playing.

Thank you, Kip Averitt. Please vote on and pass that!

1 - kbh   17 Apr 2009 @ 9:02:27 PM  I am totally against moving the power to choose textbooks and curriculum to the commissioner of education. I was in Austin Mar. 27 and heard the SBOE at work as they listened to testimony, made comments, asked questions, etc. They were ensuring that they heard all sides of the matter. Why would I want someone who doesn't even represent me have all the decision making power? Sen. Averitt, you are definitely going down the wrong track on this one.

I wasn't in Austin but listened via the audio feed to the SBOE hearings. Seems to me that they generally ignored the findings of the committee they asked to make recommendations, generally asked questions of those that agreed with their creationist beliefs and ignored the others, and then made an end run at the last minute to try to sneak in creationism into science. Perhaps it is only a matter of getting rid of these people who are elected and putting in people who don't have contempt for both science and separation of church and state. Nonetheless, I applaud Kip Averitt for viewing this matter seriously and considering how these actions can further erode Texas poor science reputation.
