ROADSIDE TRASHSomervell County Salon-Glen Rose, Rainbow, Nemo, Glass....Texas

As many of you may have noticed, our roadside trash problem here in Somervell County (and elsewhere), is epidemic. I walk a lot and often I feel as though I'm wading through a landfill. Sometimes I return from my walks laden with plastic bottles, beer cans and styrofoam cups from Sonic (ick!!). Instead of focusing on the wonderful fresh air, the beauty of the winter grasses in the breeze, or the lovely golden light of a late afternoon, I get distracted by the ugliness of our unmanaged refuse, angry at the people who put it there and angry at all those SUV's and diesel pickups with tinted windshields that go racing by, pretending they don't see it. This is not the experience I'm seeking when I go for a walk.

I'm aware of the 'Adopt a Highway' project where a person or family agrees to clean up roadside trash that other people carelessly discard along a particular stretch of road.  At first, I thought this was a good idea. But then I started thinking, my time is as valuable as the trashers. Why should i take responsibility for their trash?

Of course I do, periodically, because I can't stand it and I have a feeling The Good Fairy isn't going to come along and clean it up, either.

I've concluded that people who trash the roadsides are people who have no respect for others. And I know that people who have no respect for others are really just people who have no self-respect. Have we become a county (country?) of people with no self-respect?

Humans are the only species I know of who soil their own nests.

What does this say about us?

You really do deserve kudos for cleaning up the roads, and I'm with you, it's a shame you have to even do it. We do the same thing on our road and it's not even very busy.

Maybe that should be part of community service deals for offenders.

How about teaching one another not to do it in the first place?

Not a day goes by when I don't find something from a fast food joint dropped (by some teen?) on our lawn or in the gutter by our home. Is it because we don't provide a trash container every 20 feet or so, or would that help? We have "Adopt A Highway" folks, inmates, and others who go out to do cleanups. But the other day, driving to work, I passed hundreds of trash bags not yet picked up plus more trash thrown out after the bags were filled. Makes one wonder just how lazy and stupid we are. While there are anti-littering laws, in this economy, I don't expect police to have the time nor funds to uphold the laws. While I might occassionally see someone dump trash in or near our property and yell at them to pick it up or face my cane, this isn't much help. I question the values of people so crass as to think the world is their dump, yet I can't think of a good way to solve such a problem. Any ideas?

I think education and social outrage at such practice is our only hope. Everything is connected but people just don't know that anymore.
