Conflict Between the Existing Farmer's Market in Glen Rose and Proposed One from Duffau Woman?

At the Town Council Meeting of the City of Glen Rose on Monday, a couple of people who sell produce form the traditional spot downtown that is designated to the the Farmer's Market spoke up about a proposed Glen Rose Farmers and Artisan Market.  They ahd some questions about whether a person coming from outside the county, tht would be bringing in vendors from outside the county and possibly setting up on the courthouse square, would be either running off the farmers FROM Somervell County who set up at the already existing Farmer's Market or requiring them to participate, at a cost, in the proposed Farmer's Market. Billy Huckaby is apparently working to help them out, but I have not myself attended any meetings. Since Huckaby uses over 50 percent of the advertising budget for conventions, etc, one woudl hope that none of the city money would be going to favor an outside entity versus the farmers, etc that actually live here, grow their produce locally, and sell it locally on the square.

It's not clear to me why, if she's interested in having a weekly market that she doesn't do like other vendors do, and that is to rent out a large space or piece of land and then rent out stalls or areas to the vendors? When I go to the antique store on Hwy 67, for example (I can't think of the name of it) it looks to me that they have a lot of different vendors selling handmade or reclaimed items in the store, probably on consigment). When I lived in Ohio, we had the Aurora market that had Amish hams, vegetables and crafts, but it was a private enterprise. Last summer I was in Seattle and love the Pike's Street Market-I do think regardless of whether it's on city or county land, the vendors paid a rental fee.

Seems to me that groups that would come from ouf of town would need to bow, first, to the existing free Farmer's Market, to which local farmers can drive up and sell produce from the back of their truck, without any fee. I hope the rumour that this other entity would try to either prevent them from doing say, try to proscribe what days the county farmers can do this or try to charge them is wrong information.

Also wondering what happens, if they really do plan to try to do this every week, when it would be a weekend that some other festival would be doing on that would want the same space?

In the Glen Rose Reporter from Feb 12, 2009 Teri Shannon, who is trying to organize this puppy said.

"We're hoping to get together farmers, artisans, gardeners, and even youth... Anybody who is being hurt by the economy can benefit from a farmer's market"

Right. And we already have one for downtown.

I think any vendor should be welcome on a first come, first serve basis, without having to rent a space. If the number of vendors becomes unmanageable, then perhaps something more structured would be necessary, although I do believe this would complicate the really nice existing arrangement unnecessarily.

As I (imperfectly) understand this deal, the woman who wants this would be in charge of renting out spaces to the vendors and probably makes some kind of cut, right? So, it's not just vendors that come down to set up space, but an organized deal that would require them to be part and pay.

However, if they are from outside Glen Rose, then I think they should have to register with the City and pay a fee. Someone would keep track of whom has registered and limit the number so the square would not become unable to drive around. Outsiders should have to pay a fee. I'm already no so happy about our newspaper not being owned by people from Glen Rose, but that is another issue.

4 - green apple   15 Feb 2009 @ 5:15:21 PM  Mrs. Shannon stated at the meeting that was held on Monday, Feb. 9, that she already had 50 vendors interested in selling their goods/produce on the square... and that included 30 growers (since we only have about 5 Somervell farmers who sell on the square currently ... that means 25 are from outside of Somervell county). The proposed market is to be open on Saturday and Sunday. What if I want some tomatoes on Tuesday? Something does not sound right here. And why is Billy Huckaby supporting them ...
