Although Schieffer, 61, served under Republican President George W. Bush — with whom he worked as general manager of the Texas Rangers — he says there should be no confusion about his political affiliation.
"I am a Democrat," said Schieffer, who voted for Barack Obama in the primary and general elections.
Um. Remember Schieffer? The one who thought it was a great idea to take away people's PRIVATE PROPERTY through eminent domain in Arlington.. for a ballpark??????? Who was manager WITH BUSH THE LESSER and who's been in his administration for the last 8 years?
Schieffer calls himself a moderate Democrat with ideas about how to make Texas competitive.
"We’ve got some substantive challenges in Texas, and we’ve got to deal with them in a substantive way," he said.

Politics aside, it is extremely ironic that Schieffer wants to embark on this new career choice at the ripe old age of 61, when 13 years ago as the Rangers GM (at an arrogant 48) he forced my father to retire (fired) because he was exactly 61. My father's exemplary career record, an honorable 36 years of service to the club, and stellar work performance had no bearing, only age. I guess 61 looks very different from his current perspective.

Wow. That's a shame that happened, and, as you said, he must have changed his mind when it was HIM that turned 61. And yes, that was arrogant. Hope your father is having a happy retirment.

I met Schieffer at a Democratic primary caucus meeting (pre-Bush & GOP). He was full of himself then too. Boy was he shocked when my liberal mom was voted to run the caucus instead of him. No, she won't run for governor. I'm trying to get her to run for a council seat in Benbrook.

I met Tom Schieffer in 1986 when he was the Tarrant County coordinator for Governor Mark White's re-election campaign. My experience with Tom is nothing at all like the ones described above.
I never found him to be arrogant. I found him to be gracious and thankful to the many volunteers who were in and out of the headquarters. I was marginally employed as a substitute teacher back then, and he treated me as well as any elected official or wealthy donor.
I am a liberal. Tom is not. However, he didn't care about that when he went of out way months after the election to help me find a job so that I could support myself while I attended law school at night. I am forever grateful to him.
I encourage everyone to listen to what he has to say. After all, it's not as if there's a long line of Democrats running for governor.
