And AGAINST Sid Miller's (Tx House Dist 59) Bill to Do Killing of Feral Hogs by Helicopter

4 February 2009 at 11:11:04 PM

from the A-AS

On the surface, it doesn't sound like much, but HB 836 by Rep. Sid Miller of Stephenville pushes aerial predator control into the realm of sport hunting, and that's not good news.

Basically, Miller says that landowners could allow sport hunting of feral hogs from helicopters. Hogs already are killed — by permit — from helicopters for population control and that's the most effective short-term method of stopping the destruction the animals lay out on land and fences and crops.

However, if we move to sport hunting — essentially allowing a landowner to sell spots on a helicopter to hunters who want to shoot hogs until they get tired — it's another step over the line toward devaluing animals and possibly allowing for the take of game animals from the air. It certainly would establish the precedent if not the act.

I know that landowners need help, and that helicopters are expensive, but I'm just not sure this is the way to help them. Shooting hogs from a helicopter — and I've done it — can be an ugly business. They are harder to kill than people realize and we don't need video evidence of a string of wounded hogs wobbling all over the South Texas brush. We could need that constitutional amendment sooner than we think.

I'm from Florida. I love to hog hunt. I find the meat particularly enjoyable as does my family. After watching a video of a helicopter hog hunt, I daydream about a job like that and wonder how much I'd actually pay to do it and how much meat I could freeze for dinner (don't believe in wasting the animal, no matter how pesky) if it became sport. Words wouldn't do justice to how much I would enjoy it.

I see you claim to have already gone on one of these trips. This page doesn't indicate who you are or your capacity, but I assume you work for the government. Your attitude gives it away. "Only we should be allowed to do this. Only government employed pilots are capable of not wrecking themselves. Only government employed rifles are capable of not shooting themselves or someone else or just wounding a hog. Only police know how to drive or handle a firearm." That kind of attitude is precisely why government in this country needs to be cut down to size and if you can read the writing on the wall, I'm not the only one who feels this way. How could I be wrong in the face of an entity (government) who unapologetically ignores it's own glaring incompetence in dealing with this (every) problem.

Americans make America great, in spite of governance. Just shut up and fill the pot holes. Stop exceeding your functional capabilities.

Robert, you hit the nail on the head. I don't care if you (the author of this article) have participated in a helo hog hunt or not, you obviously don't make your living off the land. In 2006 the damage caused by feral hogs to land / crops cost landowners an average of $7,000,000 (million) in Texas (source: I personally will side with the well being of man over a destructive beast such as wild hogs EVERYTIME. Obviously, there should be some precautions and regulations to keep helo hog hunting safe for others but just tossing the proposed legislation by Sid Miller entirely out the window is unacceptable.

Just an update on this. I am quoting from an article in the Austin-American Statesman and am not the author. I completely agree about slaughtering feral hogs. Some years back I went to a predator class locally and heard a very good presentation about the destructions feral hogs cause.

What I don't agree with is shooting them from helicopters. I consider it more than dangerous, as example this video below where machine guns are being used to kill the hogs. If there are companies that want to do sports hunting, I want them to do it from the ground and not the air.
