Obama! VET YOUR PEOPLE! Somervell County Salon-Glen Rose, Rainbow, Nemo, Glass....Texas

4 February 2009 at 1:11:15 AM

I was wondering earlier today, along with a lot of other people, why Obama hasn't seemed to do a better job of vetting the people he's been picking for cabinet positions. I've been pretty busy so haven't been following the minutae of each of several people that have been found to have tax problems... but I did hear about how  Geitner used Turbo Tax which PROMPTS you to pay the taxes .. .and he apparently deliberately ignored.. but he was still confirmed as, of all positions, TREASURY SECRETARY. Frankly, that doesn't inspire a lot of confidence in the judgement of those who confirmed him. But then there is Tom Daschle and Nancy Killefer.I saw this by jobsanger and it is like he is reading my mind.

One screw-up can be written off as just a mistake -- everybody makes them. Two mistakes, and I begin wondering just what is going on. But when the third one comes, I have to think that someone is not doing their job. Who is vetting President Obama's picks for high-ranking positions in his administration? Why aren't they doing their job?

As jobsanger says, it isn't like Obama didn't apologize; after all, it can't be that people in positions of high power get to avoid paying taxes while the rest of us peons get hauled off to the pokey or pay some big fines if we do.

But dangit, I think these are simple enough mistakes to avoid in the first place. And while I'm glad he's not Bush, who was so foolishly stubborn and couldn't admit a mistake, I want the mistakes Obama makes to be of a different caliber than from not vetting the people he picks. Come ON.

P.S. This from Toby Harnden-who first says that Obama looks passive because he didn't axe the people himself and secondarily.

2. His message now is that he didn't want to appear hypocritical and to allow one rule for ordinary people who pay taxes and another for the big cheeses. But that's the impression that's left - particularly as Tim Geithner was confirmed. It's not as if Daschle was dropped out of principle - he pulled out because the situation became politically untenable.

Yup, that's the trouble. And especially for the position Geitner has.

What I have noticed about all this is how it has become the accepted thing to cheat on one's taxes. Apparently, everybody does it.
