John Hagee's Christian School Trying to Sue Its Way Into Texas Athletic League

4 February 2009 at 12:57:34 AM

I saw last year where Hagee tried to get the Texas Lege to pass a bill that woulfd force the UIL to accept it along with public schools. (Incidentally, it was Frank Corte who sponsored the bill)  Hagee's Cornerstone Church school was stacking the deck with solicited players and wanted to FORCE themselves into the UIL. In April of 2008, a lawsuit brought by Cornerstone brought a verdict AGAINST them in federal court.  Ilike what the judge said then (From San Antonio Express)

But in a 58-page decision that borrowed from the Book of Mormon and Hans Christian Andersen among other sources, U.S. District Court Judge Fred Biery said the UIL followed its own membership rules that allow it to keep out private schools when they are eligible to join other similar leagues.

"Just as it would be difficult for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle, Cornerstone's effort to enter the UIL is denied," the ruling read, noting elsewhere that Hagee, as a public school athlete and coach years ago, competed in the UIL.

"Having not followed the proverb, 'Physician, heal yourself' nor having treated others as it would like to be treated, Cornerstone has reaped what it has sown," Biery also wrote.

From Texas HS Football which quotes an article in the SA Express about how Hagee was tring to claim, with that lawsuit, that his church was being religiously discriminated against. pffffffftttt. Hagee must not have been happy, obviously, with this ruling, and also because the dang bill didn't pass in the Texas Lege, because he's TRYING AGAIN to sue to get into the UIL.

On Monday, a lawyer for Cornerstone asked a three-judge panel from the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals to overturn that ruling by U.S. District Judge Fred Biery. The court didn't immediately rule.

Cornerstone accuses the league of discriminating against parents who choose to send their children to a religious school. But the league says it excluded Cornerstone because it was eligible to join another league.

What's pretty amusing about this whole thing is how unchristian John Hagee is. I mean, his school was repeatedly violating recruiting policies. Sort of reminds me of "select" teams versus public school teams. If you're gonna pay for your players, then you're in a different class than kids who are not getting spiffs to play.

Dear Salon,

John Hagee is an awesome man of God. Of course you have been brainwashed by the liberal schools and progressives into believing otherwise.

Shame on you for falsely accusing this great man of God.

Ms Rose

You must not be a careful reader, as well as someone who decides NOT to discuss the merits of what was actually in the lawsuit and in the media but simply to use an ad hominem attack. I stand by what I said. When John Hagee decided to violate recruiting policies, he opened himself up for others to question his motives. Time to start taxing churches.
