MIDLOTHIAN - Erin Brockovich spoke to a packed house last night saying she was not in Midlothian to stir up trouble but to open a dialogue with industry and the community over the health, wealth and peace of mind of residents living here.
Brockovich, director of environmental research for the California law firm of Masry & Vititoe, spoke to a standing-room-only crowd of more than 450 people Thursday night at the Midlothian Conference Center.
"I was called by a friend and started looking around at what is going on in your community," Brockovich said. "That research and the feedback we have already gotten indicated we needed to come here."...
A pamphlet handed out by Downwinders At Risk alleges that 47 percent of the industrial pollution in the nine-county Dallas/Fort Worth area is originating from Midlothian's three cement plants. That pamphlet also stated Midlothian's three cement plants emitted 57,486,000 pounds of air pollution in 2002 and alleges that 90 pounds of toxic air pollution are emitted every hour in Midlothian.
Midlothian Mayor Boyce Whatley announced June 3 the city's plans to distribute a comprehensive set of environmental reports to more fully inform area residents about public safety issues in Midlothian. The Midlothian Chamber of Commerce followed that up Monday with an official statement concerning the community's cement plants and environmental issues.
The Midlothian Chamber of Commerce board of directors also issued a statement on air quality and health concerns in Midlothian. The chamber has several representatives of local cement plants sitting on its board.
