SBOE looking to axe evolution?

21 January 2009 at 5:24:06 PM

It is unbelievable that Texas is considering not teaching evolution in public school.  Are we in the 1950's?
Let the State Board of Education (SBOE) know that evolution is part of learning and that they all are descended from apes!
 Notification printed in Austin American-Statesman:

State board to hear science testimony this afternoon

The State Board of Education spent the morning hearing from members of the public regarding proposed changes to how science is taught in Texas schools.

Although the standards cover a range of topics and changes, most of this morning’s discussion was about proposed changes on the teaching of the origins and evolution of life on Earth.

The board appears roughly split between those pushing for teaching the “strengths and weaknesses” of scientific theories, including evolution, and those advocating removing the phrase.

Some supporters of removing the phrase say that the language could promote teaching creationism in textbooks and in science classrooms.

Board member Terri Leo, who represents part of Harris County, said at this morning’s board meeting, attended by more than 150 people, that she was unaware of any board member who supported teaching creationism in public schools.

“To my knowledge there is no one” pushing for that, she said.

The board will vote on adopting the new science standards Friday and hold a second and final vote at its March meeting.

Yes!  Dunbar is (as the Looney Tunes characters say)  despicable!

She could set back education to Neanderthal times.

Some of the leadership positions in SBOE are appointed by Gov. Perry and many others are elected by people in districts, without having any experience or credibility for the positions.

Furthermore, it is my own opinion that delegating too much power to people in one 'ivory tower' to govern ALL the school districts is just poor management and shows a real lack of decision-making skills.
