More Geeky Teevee Stuff-Computer as the Teevee

In this house, we regularly talk techie stuff.  Readers know that we, the other day, made an HD antenna so that our old analog television could finally get signals from DFW television stations. And it's interesting-when we had Dish, we didn't watch much local television; last night I watched CSI for the first time EVER and it reminded me of Quincy on steroids, that is, I really liked it so there may be other shows we would enjoy too.

But the question then becomes, should we get a converter box so that when the digital switchover occurs (and that appears to be under some debate in Congress-my feeling is that they should just get it over with if they're going to do it and not postpone it) so that we can continue to watch free television over the air on our old television? I really can't see a good reason to run out and get an HDTV right now with the prices so high, especially when there's nothing wrong with our old tevee set.

Here's an alternative we're kicking around. We could get an ATI All-in-Wonder tuner card and put it in a pc in the living room. The cost of that card (or whatever the latest model is) is around 200 versus hundreds to thousands of dollars for an HDTV. The card has PVR functionality, meaning that shows can be saved on the hard drive to watch later on, If in a pc, it could also be on the internet and have the ability to watch streaming or youtube type videos, etc, plus of course it has a tuner to pick up the HD signals.

Anyway, seems to me that the whole staid idea of how people watch television is changing rapidly and the inclusion of interactive media via a computer with traditional serial television is truly a a media explosion.
