US troops and Iraqi police secure the scene of a car bomb attack in central Baghdad. Anti-US sentiment is firmly entrenched around the world, mainly because of President George W. Bush and his policies, to such a degree that even US humanitarian efforts do little to curb it, according to a poll(AFP/Sabah Arar)

U.S. troops backed by Iraqi troops and helicopters killed seven insurgents who opened fire on the patrol from the home in western Baghdad's Jamiaa neighborhood, said police. Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld spent roughly eight hours testifying on Capitol Hill Thursday, a lot of it being roughly questioned - and lectured - about his conduct of the Iraq war.

"We represent the people of this country. We are elected," Sen. Robert Byrd, D-W.Va., told the Pentagon chief. Rumsfeld should "get off his high horse," Byrd said, and quit answering questions with "a sneer."

Rumsfeld was told anew that he should resignEven one of the officers grilled by Congress - Gen. John Abizaid, the top U.S. commander in the Middle East - acknowledged that U.S. troops were becoming aware of the drop in the public's confidence.

"When my soldiers say to me and ask me the question whether or not they've got support from the American people or not, that worries me. And they're starting to do that," he said.

Abizaid also said the Iraqi insurgency was as active as it was six months ago and more foreign fighters were flowing in all the time, despite Vice President Dick Cheney's recent insistence that the insurgency was "in its last throes."
