Free Market for Energy Future Holdings and Comanche Peak Nuclear Power Plant? Not so much.

We've said here repeatedly before that EFH/Luminant/TXU is a prime example of corporate welfare. Had they been looking to build their nuclear power plants NOW, one would think they'd be standing in line, hat in hand, for some of that bailout money. As it is, and this article points out, there's a more than strong possibility that they'll be looking for more money from the taxpayer in the future. Remember that the Mitsubishi reactors they're buliding here will be guinea pig reactors. (Naturally, this link at the DMN seeks to put all this in positive terms.)

These sorts of problems exasperated North Texas ratepayers 20 years ago when the twin Comanche Peak nuclear plants in Glen Rose were under construction. Costs ballooned from $800 million to more than $11 billion. Dallas-based Energy Future Holdings Corp., now working in a deregulated Texas market, has applied to the federal government for licenses to build two more nuclear plants at Comanche Peak with hopes it can avoid Finland's struggles.

"While we don't know the issues they have there, I do think there are macro lessons learned that will not be repeated here," said Energy Future Holdings executive vice president Mac McFarland.

No contract to build the Comanche Peak plants has been issued yet, but Mr. McFarland said the cost could be roughly $15 billion.

Reminds me. I'd like to hear from people who were here before the original Comamche Peak reactos were built. I'd like to know what life was like here versus now, the pros and cons, etc. If that's you, either comment on this post or drop me an email.
