Some Thoughts at Almost The End of this Presidential Election Cycle

I want Obama to win. I'm also kind of exhausted with the whole thing. Tomorrow night we're going to go downtown Glen Rose and watch the election results get written up on the big board as they come in. And maybe I'll bring a radio along to listen to NPR.Here's how I feel overall.

This is the last time I pay so much attention, for so long, to a campaign. Any campaign. A campaign shouldn't be going on for years. I got in the habit of watching it most days because of cable/sat television. Too easy to turn on, say, Hardball, and watch the same pundits talking about whether TODAY so and so is ahead. The cable/sat also stiffed candidates in favor of the ones THEY wanted to win or at least pull ahead. It wasn't fair. I don't think this will change but I don't want to be a party to a system that ought to be fair.. but isn't.

This is the last time I pay attention to giving money from repeated pleas all the time, over email. I'm going to give what I want, without respect to what goal the candidate wants to reach at any given moment. Running for office ought not to be such an expensive venture. I used to think that maybe there were ways to fix that. I don't think so anymore-it's way out of control. People who might want to run but don't have an excellent money raising machine (or know how to do it) might be principled but have a disadvantage behind those who do. So much for what is obviously a myth about anyone being able to be president in this country.

Obama stood out by not stooping to the nasty, race-bating, red-bating smears of John McCain and the Republicans. Some news people who used to admire McCain wonder what happened to the upright, moral guy of the Straight Talk Express? My personal feeling is that he was always this way but he learned, sort of, from the way Bush ran against him. And when he was truly losing, he figured what the heck, I'll be that same gutter guy. Running dirtball campaigns isn't anything new, historically. And I expect there will be more of the same. That gets back to premise number one, that I just don't' want to be paying attention to that stuff for 2 years. Ever again.

Should John McCain suddenly come from the losing place he's in, it will be because, in my opinion, he appealed to the worst elements in people. And got people to ignore that the same stuff he's painting Obama with is also all  over him, too. He has his own Jeremiah Wright, John Hagee. Even his VP candidate is embroiled in a very weird cultish sounding religion. I don't go into the other things, but it's a fact that his attempts in this last part of the election are desperate, and depend on the fear in people. Maybe he will win at the last minute by joining them in the dark. That makes him a dishonorable man and one not worthy of respect if he becomes president.

Should Obama win, I know I don't share his viewpoints 100 percent. Yeah, I wish I did. But I feel that the promise of an America in which someone other than a rich white guy with connections is president is due. If there had been a woman that I felt was in this position, I'd be rooting for her too (I don't think that woman was Hillary Clinton, although since she has dropped from the race, my respect for her has come up some).

 Deb,

Your intense involvement in this campaign is a wonderful reminder to us that we must all be intensely involved in our political journey. From the plundering of our environment to the selection of our President, we cannot rest. No, it's not perfect. Yes, it is exhausting. But that's OK.

Thank you for what you do for our little community and our country.

S.G.

:)-I'm going to emulate your example, and do something artistic next week. I figure regardless of who wins, it will be like post-Christmas.

There are many ways for one to be creative. You will simply be  exchanging one art form for another.
