Energy Conflict of Interest for Kay Bailey Hutchison

She has as much as $2.4 million in stock in a dozen major energy companies and received a comparatively high amount of campaign contributions from the energy sector

Bob Stein, dean of the social science school at Rice University, said the investment in energy shares "is clearly a conflict of interest in some people's minds, but I doubt Texans will lose too much sleep over it" because putting money in the energy sector may be considered the Texas thing to do.

Hutchison, who serves as vice chair of the Senate Republican conference and may run for governor of Texas in 2006, owns stock in Houston-based Halliburton, whose extensive contracted services to the U.S. military in Iraq has led to billing disputes with the government. The company once was headed by Vice President Dick Cheney.

Hutchison also owns stock in Houston-based CenterPoint Energy and Reliant Energy; Chevron; Enterprise Products Partners; Royal Dutch Petroleum; TXU; Transocean Sedco Forex; Schlumberger; Xcel Energy; and Texas Genco Holdings.

One of her largest holdings, valued between $100,001 and $250,000, is in Exxon Mobil stock. All values on the financial disclosures are given in ranges rather than exact figures.

Exxon Mobil gave $13,820 to her campaign during the 2003-04 election cycle, when she was not on the ballot.
