I'm female. And this male-oriented spin on Sarah Palin makes me queasy. Besides the other point about whether it's just the media that someone doesn't like her for the reason that she's just the gal next door (which I want to talk about on a separate post), this idea that Sarah Palin somehow represents some mythical Average American named JoeSixPack is not only baloney but degrading to all women. (Incidentally, Palin was JUST in Philadelphia where there is a guy who writes a column called Joe Six Pack)
Let's talk about this. Maybe the term "Joe Six Pack" works for some men. The archetypical idea of a hardworking NASCAR daddy who is waiting to get off work, stop by the beer section at the grocery store on the way home (or better, his slavering wife has his beers in the fridge already, frosty and waiting, as well as she with a foot massage), and then props up his feet on his Lazyboy to watch the teevee, may be an archetype. When I lived in The Colony, I knew a lot of men like that. One guy had an entire living room built with special shelves for his beer can collection. Every Saturday, all the men would go over to his house and watch whatever the Nascar race was that day and get drunk. Their wives and girifriends might be there too but typically would be off in another room talking, taking a break only to fetch the guy some more beer or snacks.
One might also expect that Joe Six-Pack is a euphemism for an Archie Bunkerist type of white person. But that's exactly why using it on a WOMAN is fatal-because the term Joe SixPack is particularly crafted to a white, drinking, man who likes the world of the 50's where women are secondary appendages and help meets. Even if Sarah Palin wants to call herself a Josephina Six-Pack or something, she is putting herself into that box where women are the Edith Bunkers of the world, ready to fit into a man's world, rather than challenge it.
And WHY would Democrats want to be classed into whether they are Beer Drinking Democrats... or not? Sheesh. You can't drink a beer without being put into the Archie Bunker category of White People? Or, what if you don't drink? You're not an average american because you're not Joe Six Pack?
I don't want Sarah Palin to be president (because that's what she would be if Old Man McCain dies) because her views are very different than mine (and I would argue that I am just as much an Average American as she is, whatever the fool that means, because she has been caught lying about her record multiple times, because she is attempting to thwart an investigation into her ethics, and because I am not going to ever vote for a woman JUST BECAUSE she's a woman but because I think she has the beliefs, values and qualifications that I share. Palin isn't it.
And trying to appeal to the boozedrinkers of the world isn't the way to inspire respect.
