Why Does Sarah Palin Hate Polar Bears? Lawsuit Challenges US Decision to Delist Polar Bears

Five industry groups are disputing the US decision to list the polar bear as a threatened species. Last week, they filed suit in federal court to attempt to change the text of the listing that says business projects in Alaska — but no other state — must undergo reviews of their greenhouse-gas emissions.

The American Petroleum Institute, the US Chamber of Commerce, the National Mining Association, the National Association of Manufacturers and the American Iron and Steel Institute say the listing unfairly singles out Alaskan businesses.

It is the latest legal challenge to the May listing of the polar bear. The state of Alaska, led by governor and presumptive vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin, has sued the government over the decision, saying it harms oil and gas exploration in the state. For its part, the environmental group the Center for Biological Diversity, which pushed for the original listing, is suing to get the polar bear upgraded from 'threatened' to 'endangered'.

And Palin-she wrote an editorial for the NYTimes because gas and oil is more important that protecting polar bears.

Polar bears are magnificent animals, not cartoon characters. They are worthy of our utmost efforts to protect them and their Arctic habitat. But adding polar bears to the nation’s list of endangered species, as some are now proposing, should not be part of those efforts....

This month, the secretary of the interior is expected to rule on whether polar bears should be listed under the Endangered Species Act. I strongly believe that adding them to the list is the wrong move at this time. My decision is based on a comprehensive review by state wildlife officials of scientific information from a broad range of climate, ice and polar bear experts.

I'm guessing she wants to grab her big ole gun and hunt 'em down.

Update: Turns out that Sarah Palin is caught in yet ANOTHER lie.

On the question of extending the Endangered Species Act to polar bears, Sarah Palin hews to the Stephen Colbert position. And in her defense, she cited a study by her own state government in an op-ed for the New York Times earlier this year. In that article, she wrote:

I strongly believe that adding [polar bears] to the list is the wrong move at this time. My decision is based on a comprehensive review by state wildlife officials of scientific information from a broad range of climate, ice and polar bear experts. In fact, there is insufficient evidence that polar bears are in danger of becoming extinct within the foreseeable future — the trigger for protection under the Endangered Species Act. And there is no evidence that polar bears are being mismanaged through existing international agreements and the federal Marine Mammal Protection Act.

This was a lie. We discover in the New York Times yesterday that the state's wildlife officials discovered no such thing:

Rick Steiner, a University of Alaska professor, sought the e-mail messages of state scientists who had examined the effect of global warming on polar bears ... An administration official told Mr. Steiner that his request would cost $468,784 to process.

When Mr. Steiner finally obtained the e-mail messages — through a federal records request — he discovered that state scientists had in fact agreed that the bears were in danger, records show.
