You Wanna Keep Your Kid in Private School? Don't Ask for Taxpayer Funded School Vouchers!

Read an article in the Houston Chronicie about families that are not only cutting back on other things in their budgets so that their children can attend private schools, but, gasp, they are having to ask for financial aid.

"It's the extra things — it's the uniforms and the lunch program," said Beth Lowry Speck, director of admission at the 680-student Duchesne Academy of the Sacred Heart. "It's more people just saying, 'Gosh, I just need help with the little things.' "

lunch is extra?

Parents are still willing to sacrifice to cover tuition at Duchesne, which tops out at $16,500.

"We have people crying they're not getting in," she said.

Michael Maher, head of the John Cooper School in The Woodlands, said his school is at its capacity of 950 students. It awarded $700,000 in need-based financial aid, just slightly more than last year

I assume that since these are private schools, that they themselves are the ones that are arranging for financial aid for the people who can't quite afford it anymore. Maybe through a bank or other lending institutions? One wonders what the interest rates are for this. All that is fine, I have no problem with people spending THEIR money the way THEY want to.

But this is a prime reason why school vouchers as supported by Texas taxpayers are a bad idea. I'm already cutting back on my own budget with the Bush recession. We are trying to be careful about gasoline, trying to make less trips to the store, buy food more wisely and cheaply, watch the electricity, do outside clothesline drying, and more. But I'll be danged if I want to see one nickel of my tax money go to help people who want to send their kids to private school and want ME to help pay for school vouchers so that they can do it. If those people can't afford it, let them put their kids into public schools, let them get INVOLVED in the public schools, and public education and make sure it's a good one. Otherwise, it is THEIR choice, and no legislator needs to be supporting school vouchers.

Reminds me that somebody needs to get Sid Miller fully and completely on the record about whether he would vote for school vouchers under any circumstance. He said, in the debate he had last time around with Ernie Casbeer (last election) that he was against vouchers but he voted for them. He voted for pilot vouchers, and then voted against the amendment which would have stripped out school vouchers from SB 422.
