I Heard Last Night that Dish Is Losing Subscribers

5 August 2008 at 12:49:44 PM

As readers here know, we're dumping *Clutter Media* around here lately. Part of the reason is to cut expenses and live a more frugal life; the other is that, because we're examining at a close level how we're living, whether we really WERE getting an advantage from a Dish network subscription. In cutting back, Dish's customer service wasn't too great until hub took some concerns he had to a manager. Dish then was supposed to come out on Sunday to check the service. Here's what always gets me about that stuff. WE have to be waiting for them to come out between X and X time and if we decide to leave or somehow don't answer the door, WE get charged. But we were there, waiting since 8 in the morning and about 10 got a call from Dish that the contractor... CANCELLED.  So we cancelled the whole thing.

That was Sunday. It's Tuesday now. We watched a Netflix movie on Saturday night, one of my favorites "The Magnificent Seven" and then watched half of "Seven Samurai" on Sunday night. No television stations, no satellite.. and it's been terrific. I feel like the television was sapping a lot of my energy with repetitive nonsense.. engaging but pointless. Plus because it's a visual medium, you have to be there in front of it to watch, very freeing not to have it.

Today, through Stumbleupon, I found a website called Pandora Radio that is letting me make a custom station to hear music I like.  And we listen to BBC World News at night.

So last night on NPR's MarketPlace, the commentators read an item about how Dish unexpectedly lost subscribers.

Although the subscriber loss meant lower installation costs for DISH, which helped boost its quarterly profit to above Wall Street expectations, analysts said on Monday the customer loss boded ill for the company's growth prospects.

"This is not pretty. It's the first ever loss of subscribers by a major satellite TV company," said Craig Moffett, analyst at Bernstein Research.

Add us to the list. I further saw that Dish now might try to merge with DirecTV. Won't bring us back...
