Assorted School Notes from All Over Texas-July 2008

I like this. Dallas ISD is interviewing candidates from other countries OVER THE WEB. I have believed for a long time that we have a lot of technology in this country that allows us to do long distance training, meetings, interviews, etc, and that includes working from home or virtual offices. Great to see DISD taking advantage of this.

Why might they do so? Because there's a budget crunch coming to Texas schools. We don't fund our schools well in Texas.

AUSTIN — School districts across Texas are likely to face extreme fiscal hardships over the next two years as transportation costs spiral out of control, enrollments continue to grow and the transition from textbooks to technology progresses....

Most of the educators agreed that the school finance overhaul enacted by lawmakers two years ago — an attempt to settle the ongoing dispute between rich and poor school districts — is already falling short on generating the funds needed to sustain public schools.

Lancaster ISD Trustees hiring a lawyer to investigate superintendent Larry Lewis. (I see that they hired Harry Jones, who is the same attorney that represented Joelle Ogletree).

Lancaster school trustees hired an attorney late Monday to investigate claims raised by the board president that Superintendent Larry Lewis withheld information from board members and tampered with their mail.

The 5-2 vote came at the end of a contentious meeting that ended after midnight. Trustees Ed Kirkland and Marie Elliott, who cast the dissenting votes, tried unsuccessfully to have the item removed from the agenda.

Texas will likely appeal a court ruling that says Texas has not educated spanish-speaking students properly.

The chairmen of the House and Senate education committees said lawmakers were already zeroing in on the problems of limited-English students – including low test scores and high dropout rates – before U.S. District Judge William Wayne Justice ruled Friday that the state has failed to properly educate those students.

In issuing the surprise decision, the longtime federal judge reversed his own July 2007 ruling that affirmed the state's bilingual education programs. His new order gives the state until Jan. 31 to come up with a different plan.
