More on Kenneth Copeland-Because the Investigation into Evangelists Continues

I just wrote about update to Grassley's investigation into evangelists improperly using monies. FW Star-Telegram popped out another article shortly thereafter. Looks like if you're a pal or kin of Kenneth Copeland's, you've profited from HIS profits he gets from shilling his religion.

Over the years, a circle of Copeland’s relatives and friends have done just that, The Associated Press has found.

They include the brother-in-law with a lucrative deal to broker Copeland’s television time, the son who acquired church-owned land for his ranching business and saw it more than quadruple in value, and board members who together have been paid hundreds of thousands of dollars for speaking at church events.

WHY is Senator Grassley Investigating the Six Ministries Including Kenneth Copeland et al?

Copeland is fighting a bigger picture here. Whether or not you agree with his teachings, he has a valid argument. He requested an IRS investigation which would give Grassley all of the information he requested. However, it would all have to be kept confidential. Which leaves me wondering what kind of exploitation of the information Grassley may have had planned down the road. I am not a follower of Copeland's, or any of the ministries, but I will support him in this fight. Our rights will be affected by this.

What in the world is Kenneth Copeland doing that he wants to keep secret? If you're a Bible believer, you know the verse about the evildoer that doesn't want to come into the light so that his deeds will be exposed. Copeland's organization seeks to be a non-profit tax exempt organization; if that changes, he'd have to pay back taxes.

Personally, I don't care if religious people want to give all their money to scam artists who use it to live the high life, although it would be nice to think that con artists can't get away with fleecing the public. I never understood why so many people donated to Oral Roberts when he said that 900 foot Jesus was going to end his life if people didn't pony up money, but you can't legislate common sense. That said, I don't think churches should get any tax money from the government, and if they don't want to have to pay taxes, they should have to prove they are following non-profit laws just like any other entity

Seems to me that no one's *rights* are being violated by this, more like what the heck is Copeland scared people will find out? That he'll go into obscurity like Robert Tilton who was also living off the gullible?

This attack from Grassley with the nepotism angle is ridiculous. It is obvious that this situation has been dragged out for long enough. It is time for Grassley to suck it up and admit his mistakes with this investigation. Resorting to this smear tactic is taking it even further, and this just all needs to come to an end. Our Congressmen have more pressing issues they should be addressing.

Since most of these ministries passed recent and near-recent IRS audits, Grassley resorted to the media trickster angle to resolve his frustrations over their success.  I am sure adjustments have been made by the ministries after all of this, but I don't think they scam.  Where are the results from those who have produced their records en toto?  That would end it for them.  It appears that Grassley intended nothing more than loosing the religiously biased media.  His recent media efforts, such as the subject of this article, appear to me to be defensive.  There is a backlash to him for his obvious inequities.  He should close it out as quickly and quietly as he can for his own sake at least.

Huh? Media Trickster? Oh, please. Thank goodness there are people in government that want to examine how our tax money is being spent and whether an organization, ANY organization, is getting out of taxes by claiming to be a non-profit. It's interesting that both the previous commenters are essentially trying to close down Grassley's investigation, all based on whether THEY think that the religious people involved are scamming. Tell you what, if Kenneth Copeland et al want to be a church, nothing stops them. I could, right now, set up a church in my home and start asking for donations.  And the very law that some complain of that the IRS uses to check me out is also the one that makes it difficult if not impossible for the IRS to do it on the basis of what I believe or am preaching. I'm going to do a main page blog again about this, but also putting an excellent link to a first amendment site law professor's blog.
