Erik Slaughter's Last Payday at GRISD was in June... but he started with A&M in March

I noticed the other day that Erik Slaughter, according to the Star-Telegram *confirmed* that he is now the Texas A&M at Commerce Defensive Coordinator. That was on July 8, 2008-the same article said that he actually started in this position on March 8

Former Glen Rose and Stephenville football coach Erik Slaughter confirmed on Tuesday that he is the Texas A&M-Commerce defensive coordinator. Slaughter said he’s had the position since March, but it has just recently been made public.

Why was it only recently made public? Why would that have been on the hush? Seems that when Erik Slaughter tendered his resignation from GRISD on February 15, 2008, he said his last day would be June 30, 2008. (Approved by GRISD on Feb 18). I had thought when he resigned that he would stop getting paid, since he wasn't, after all, actually working at the school,  but apparently that wasn't true. His last paycheck, according to GRISD, was on June 25, 2008. So he would have been getting paid by GRISD *and* by Texas A&M for a few months.

Maybe that's common with schools? Where someone can resign and not actually be a working employee but get paid anyway? I must be naive.

P.S. This isn't a private corporation where some CEO like from Countrywide gets paid a big salary and bonus while he grinds homeowners into the ground. These people are being paid from MY money, as a taxpayer. And there's been someone else in Slaughter's position at GRISD for awhile. So I have, along with other taxpayers, been paying double for two salaries for ONE position. Arrgggh. These are public schools, not Enchanted Corporate Islands.

P.P.S. His replacement started in February 2008.

I am not sure why but this seems to be a common occurence with schools.  Robert Dameron, Superintendent for Cleburne ISD who "stepped down" earlier this year with his official resignation date after school was over.  That gave him another service year towards his retirement as well as his salary.  This means that Cleburne ISD was paying Dameron's salary was well as the interim superintendent.

I know of other cases where AD's were "relieved" of their normal responsiblities but kept on the payroll until their contracts ended during the summer.  Another AD was brought in to get the season started during the spring and both AD's salaries were paid.

The terms and conditions under which an employee leaves the district is ultimately approved by the school which is ultimately responsible to the citizens of the district.
