Not Just War Spending Approval-BUT THE LARGEST WAR SPENDING BILL TO DATE

and Chet Edwards voted for it.

The only good thing, sort of, in the bill, is that Jim Webbs's proposal to give college tuition to veterans is in it. You may remember, McCain and Bush were COMPLETELY AGAINST this, in effect, spitting on the troops by saying that it might discourage the military from continued participation if they could actually, gasp, get some education out of the deal instead of siging up for more. But what seems really skewed is how the whole thing is going to be paid for. Especially when you consider how often Republicans whine about spending. Seems to me, over time, the more I read about Republicans, they're like the Credit Card Vampires. Everything is okay to go on a budget as long as somebody else pays for it in the future, unlike Democrats who would like to be fiscally responsible and not leave debt to their grandchildren. I mean, read the article. Originally the Democrats wanted to have the richer people in this world help provide the cost of the tutiion. Oh, no Republicans wouldn't go for that, so now the bill has passed, but there isn't any visible plan for how to pay for it.

The fiscally conservative House Blue Dog Democrats, who pushed for the tax hike to pay for the veterans' benefit, expressed frustration that the war spending and the new GI bill benefit will be added to the growing national debt.

"We are making a serious mistake by not paying for these things," said Rep. Allen Boyd, D-Fla., a Blue Dog member. "It is one our children and grandchildren will pay for."

But House Minority Leader John Boehner, R-Ohio, who helped broker the deal, insisted that the spending for the war and for veterans' benefits was worth it. "The cost of this bill, frankly, is high, but it's a price of freedom. And I don't think you put a price on freedom and security in our country," he said.

Oh, Okay. Let's all roll around in debt as long as we shout "FREEDOM, FREEDOM" at the same time. How about Republicans quit trying to trick people by comparing intangibles like *freedom and security* with the money coming out of yours, mine, and our descendant's pockets.
