Clean and Safe Energy Coaltion aka Case

Video from NRC Meeting in Glen Rose-the Front Group of the Nuclear Energy Institute Attended

21 June 2008 at 12:13:30 AM

I have put some more video of the audience comments and questions up on Youtube, still not done but hope to have all I wanted to put in the next few days. Had to call out one in particular. A guy stood up and recited, very clumsily, I think, some talking points he had from his CASE organization. I didn't know what CASE was, hadn't heard of it, but he obviously had an agenda to push about nuclear energy. In fact, it seemed to annoy the NRC moderator, who not only made it a point to be clear that the NRC wasn't any part of CASE nor endorsing them, and doesn't make energy policy, but didn't seem to like the CASE guy's obvious propagandizing. See for yourself.

I happened upon an entry about just who CASE is yesterday and wanted to note it here. From PRWatch.

Whitman with Rudy GiulianiAt the Nuclear Energy Institute's (NEI's) recent conference, Penn, Schoen & Berland pollster Craig T. Smith said the industry would soon be emphasizing the employment opportunities created by building new nuclear power plants. On June 17, the NEI front group "Clean and Safe Energy Coalition" (CASEnergy) released a white paper titled "Job Creation in the Nuclear Renaissance." CASEnergy co-chair Christine Todd Whitman said, "There's a reason why nuclear plant neighbors are so in favor of nuclear plants, and that's because they're economic generators for their communities." The white paper gives figures of "610,000 high-paying jobs," if "the U.S. builds 33 to 41 new nuclear power plants." But NEI estimates (pdf) that -- under favorable conditions -- four to eight new nuclear plants may come online by 2016. A 2004 study (pdf) by the Union of Concerned Scientists estimated that deriving 20 percent of U.S. electricity from renewable sources by 2020 would create 355,000 "high-paying jobs."

From Sourcewatch

The Clean and Safe Energy Coaltion is a public relations campaign for new reactors launched April 24, 2006, funded by the trade association, the Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI), and headed by former Bush Environmental Protection Agency administrator, Christine Todd Whitman and former Greenpeace activist Patrick Moore, who left that group in 1986. [1] It was launched on April 24, 2006.[1]

Front Group

The Columbia Journalism Review (CJR) described CASEnergy as a front group for the nuclear power industry, created by the PR giant Hill & Knowlton. [2]

The CJR criticised the Washington Post for simply referring to Moore as an "environmentalist" and a co-founder of Greenpeace — without mentioning that he is funded by the nuclear industry. A string of other newspapers followed suit, failing to mention that Moore is also a paid spokesman for the nuclear industry. CJR said it is "maddening that Hill & Knowlton, which has an $8 million account with the nuclear industry, should have such an easy time working the press".

The words "clean" and "safe" were deliberately used as part of the nuclear industry's multi-million pound campaign to repackage itself. It is interesting that the industry carries on using these words even after similar campaigns were found to be misleading.
