Caught a HUGE Possum in the Trap Today

As readers know, we've had at least one predator roaming around here at night. Out in the rural areas, I can hear coyotes, can sometimes smell skunks (In fact, theGlen Rose Reporter newspaper said somebody found a rabid skunk around here last week!) , have caught a raccoon before that I think was killing poultry and saw what I think was a fox on the driveway a couple of years ago. Last week, something broke into the chicken pen and killed almost every single chicken except two -but it didn't get the duck. Also, the geese that are always outside have never been touched, so either they're a lot better at getting away or their size and hissing puts off smaller predators. Over the last 2 days I have lost 3 ducks-2 yesterday and one apparently last night.  One of the remaining ducks has been walking around quacking loudly, calling for the girl that is now not around anymore.

So we put out a trap after the chicken massacre and put some apple in it. I thought about putting some cooked meat in, but we also have cats and I just knew one of them would end up in it.

Just was out letting out the big chickens and the duck from the chicken house, which I have been locking up tight at night, and there, in the trap, was probably the biggest possum I have seen yet. And he's not happy at being in that cage. Now *I* am not doing anything about it, it has some mean teeth and claws, so he'll be there till hub gets home.

P.S. I guess I will also need to start putting the ducks up at night in their own house. The geese, however, seem to be tough enough to ward off whatever it is that is threatening everything.

P.P.S Tonight while hub and I were walking in the field, we saw ANOTHER huge possum walking into some weeds. Maybe it's a family.

Opossums give me the creeps.  Their near blindness make them stupidly vicious.

Maybe you caught the "culprit" though.

Well, maybe. I think I caught *one* culprit and it well may be the what killed all those chickens. But the ducks are another matter. I can't find any duck carcasses lying around, so I think something carried them off. When it cools off in a few hours, I'm going to fix the ramp into the duck house and put all the birds in for the night. The duck house is very secure and I have one of those barrel bolt latches on the outside. I kind of have liked them sleeping out in the yard but not if something has made the yard a dinner stop.
