from TPJ -

April 2007part from lobbyist-reported travel gifts, state officials themselves reported that a variety ofprivate interests gave them 201 travel gifts worth a total of $539,245. By now it should be clear that she is a registered lobbyist. This report distinguishes between donated trips reported by registered lobbyists versus those reported by traveling officials because this distinction—however blurry— dictates which trip details get disclosed.

Attorney General Greg Abbott was the largest overall recipient of travel gifts after Governor Perry. Abbot’s top donor was Dalton Lott ($28,000 in travel gifts to Abbott), who heads Duncanville-based Club Marketing Services. Club Marketing does marketing for big-box retailers such as Wal-Mart and Costco. Lott has been a big investor in the renovation of Dallas Executive Airport, the headquarters of his Century Aviation Jet Center. Abbott’s next largest travel patron is H. Gary Heavin ($18,000 in travel to Abbott) the founder of women’s fitness chain Curves International. An abortion opponent, Heavin is a big donor to crisis pregnancy centers in Texas.

Interestingly, he's contributed to ARMPAC (Americans for a Republican Majority)-That was Tom Delay's unethical committee.

P.S. This is unrelated, but an interesting article from Franchise Pick entitled "Has Curves for Women Abandoned Its Franchise Owners"? The article makes the claim that, now that the market is saturated for franchise ownership, Curves International has turned to lucrative deals with General Mills and Avon to sell food and clothing, AND THAT franchise owners can get those products cheaper through those arrangements than AS a franchise owner.

Finally, there's a promotion going on right now called the Curves-Avon Fitness Study. Here's what it actually is.

The nationwide Curves/Avon project will compile data on participants who complete 12 free workouts over a 30-day period under supervised training, evaluate their fitness levels before and after, and share free Curves services, such as an online diet and fitness solution.

“We want to get as many participants as we can,” said Barbara Moylan, who owns the Curves in Hawaii Kai Shopping Center."The data will be submitted to Curves International, and then to Baylor University, which will evaluate the results for publication in medical and health journals.”

People may sign up any time before the cut-off date of June 20. The study is a promotion, but the company believes the outcome of a 30-day commitment will lead to better health for its subjects.

Here's from the Baylor site

The Exercise & Sport Nutrition Laboratory (ESNL) at Baylor University began research investigating the safety and efficacy of the Curves for Women fitness and weight loss program in the fall of 2002.  Since then, researchers within the ESNL have conducted a number of research studies examining the short and long-term impact of women participating in the Curves program.  These efforts have culminated in the award of a five year multimillion dollar grant to the ESNL in order to start the Curves Women's Health Initiative.  The following describes the mission, current and planned studies, and provides links to results of research presented at various scientific meetings.

Here's my question. Where the heck did the grant come from? Tax payer money? Am *I* paying for this grant? Probably not, it looks to me like hte GRANT CAME FROM CURVES. So Curves is paying Baylor for a grant to do studies about curves. A little circular, eh?
