Letter to the Editor in Cleburne, Texas Paper About Chet Edwards and the Protect America Act

First, here's a snip from the letter.

To begin, a little history is in order. The legal authority for the U.S. intelligence community to collect foreign intelligence (info that protects Americans from terrorist attacks and that our soldiers in harm’s way rely on to do their duty) was destined to expire on Feb. 15. But after the continual blockade of the bipartisan FISA legislation during that week Edwards and some of Nancy Pelosi’s liberal merry pranksters skipped town without reauthorizing the Protect America Act, stranding our law enforcement and potentially putting millions of American lives in danger.

Edwards and a couple of other Texas politicians have shown that this is a strong indicator of Pelosi’s political muscle with these most liberal Texas members. This puts our men and women in law enforcement in great jeopardy. And all the while I thought Edwards was a friend of our military men and women.

I quite often disagree with Chet Edwards about other stances he has taken but this isn't valid.

  • Republicans voted against approving a 21 day extension while the bill's particulars were being reconsidered and debated.
  • Bush threatened to veto any extension.
  • Republicans told their staff not to participate in negotiations to reconcile differences between Republican and Democrat positions on the bill.

If Bush and his congressional cronies truly believed that America is “open to attack” without the PAA, they’d support a temporary extension and engage in good faith negotiations. Since they haven’t, it’s clear they’re more interested in playing political games than working to protect Americans.

Most importantly, people act as though we don't still have the original FISA law that let people get WARRANTS for spying on people... and don't forget that in emergency situations, law enforcement can go ahead and do it but then have so many days to come back to justify it before what essentially is a rubber stamp organization. Again, WARRANTS, not just saying "I want to go surveill you" which goes against our 4th amendment protections. Remember that the last time Congress overhauled FISA, Bush PRAISED it.

Now what I personally hope is that Chet Edwards will uphold the law and allow the court cases against the telecoms to go forward instead of protecting them, as Bush wants, and burying any chance for Americans to both know what the telecoms have been doing or possibly stop illegal spying om Americans.

P.S. I mentioned a while back that the argument Republicans, including John Cornyn, were making about the time frame for getting warrants, and using a specific example of a serviceman who passed on, were bogus.
