Paul Harper of Glen Rose places 4th in Cowboy Capital No-Limit Hold-Em Tournament in Stephenville

2 March 2008 at 11:22:17 AM

I played yesterday from 9am til about 1am in the 5th annual Cowboy Capital tournament in Stephenville, Texas.

I placed 4th and received the following:

Final Table hat
Final Table money clip
lucky horseshoe
tournament t-shirt
a physically large check to put on the wall
$5900 cash

The buy in was $300 and there were 300 people playing.  I played pretty conservatively, got lucky a few times, and made it to the final 30 that were going to get paid. I was pretty excited at that point considering this was the first time I had played in this tournament and that I hadn't played any other large in person tournaments except one in Oklahoma where I made it to the 3rd break but no cash. Then we got to the final table....I was thinking WOW, this is cool, I'm going to make $1000 no matter what happens from here on out. I was far from the largest stack at the beginning of the final table. I was the large stack on the final table after the last break with a little over 1.4 million but couldn't catch anything it seemed and my stack dwindled once the 5th person was out. We were at 50,000/100,000 blinds so it didn't take too long with 4 of us and me not catching any cards. I had a great time and enjoyed meeting lots of new people from all over the place.

I must give out a huge amount of thanks to all my poker buddies from Comanche Peak. There are about 10 of us that play once a week and I am the only non-employee of a power plant. Since I started playing with them in October they have taught me many good lessons and I thank them for their support last evening by sticking around til after 1am!!
